Hace un tiempo tuvimos la oportunidad de hablar con Rick Rangel vocalista/guitarrista de los estadounidenses Fueled By Fire. En esta entrevista Rick nos contó sobre los orígenes de la banda, planes futuros, una posible visita a Latino América y mucho más.

TMR: Hola, antes que todo ¿Como nace Fueled By Fire?
Rick: La banda comenzó en el 2002 con nuestro baterista Carlos y un ex miembro de la banda llamado Sal. La banda comenzó con todos aprendiendo a tocar instrumentos y haciendo covers. Me uní a la banda a comienzos de 2003 y nuestro bajista Anthony se unió al poco tiempo. Desde ese entonces comenzamos a tener shows. Hicimos tantos cambios en la formación de la banda de 2002 a 2006, con miembros que se iban por diferentes razones, pero luego de todos esos años. La actual formación fue establecida en 2006. Hemos lanzado tres discos y hecho extensas giras con esta formación.
TMR: ¿Cuales son las principales influencias de la banda?
Rick: Tenemos un montón de influencias, algunas más obvias que otras. Hemos sido influenciados por bandas como Slayer, Dark Angel, Death, Exodus, Sepultura. Pero también tenemos influencias de otros tipos de metal desde Morbid Angel y Posssessed hasta Iron Maiden, Judas Priest. Todos tenemos nuestras preferencias individuales, así que hay espacio para mezclar nuestras ideas.
TMR: ¿Cual es tu opinión respecto a la actual escena del Thrash Metal? ¿Ves futuro en ella?
Rick: Sigue fortaleciéndose alrededor del mundo. Creo que mientras las grandes bandas originales de thrash sigan activas, los fans más jóvenes seguirán interesados en tocar música rápida y agresiva. Hemos notado que siempre hay bandas nuevas que intentan mantener las viejas costumbres vivas, intentando mantener la música de forma tradicional y en el underground. Siento que siempre será de esa manera.
TMR: ¿Cuales son los planes para el futuro de Fueled By Fire?
Rick: No tenemos planes inmediatos, nos estamos enfocando en nuestras vidas fuera de la música. Pero espero que podamos escribir un nuevo disco a comienzos del próximo año. Así que manténganse informados en nuestras redes sociales.
TMR: ¿Cual crees que es considerado su mejor disco?
Rick: En mi opinión, puedo decir que mi favorito es "Plunging Into Darkness". Conozco bandas que dicen que su ultimo disco es el mejor, creo que el ultimo que sacamos es un buen disco, pero siento que "Plunging Into Darkness" tiene algo especial y fue bien recibido por la gente. Es un disco muy underground y tal vez podamos repetir ese efecto con otro disco.
TMR: ¿Cuales son tus canciones favoritas para tocar en vivo?
Rick: Creo que todos estamos de acuerdo que "Eye of the Demon" es nuestra favorita, es divertida y hace que la gente se mueva. Además de esa, todos tenemos canciones favoritas, la mía es de nuestro ultimo disco, una canción llamada "Obliteration", es una canción muy divertida para tocar en vivo, con buenas partes para cabecear.
TMR: ¿Que diferencia a Fueled By Fire de otras bandas de Thrash Metal?
Rick: yo creo que tenemos una mezcla única de diferentes estilos en nuestras canciones. Escribimos canciones sin pensar que estilo serán. La gente nos llama una banda de thrash metal tradicional, pero mezclamos un montón de diferentes elementos del metal, como death metal. Creo que nosotros tenemos diferentes estilos de tocar nuestros instrumentos. lo que nos hace ofrecer un sonido único.
TMR: Como una banda con años de recorrido. ¿Que consejo le darías a las bandas de thrash emergentes?
Rick: Si quieren tocar por un largo tiempo, asegúrense de hacerlo por el amor a la música. Si ya tocar no es divertido, ya no vale la pena. Es importante enfocarse e ignorar toda la mierda negativa, sigue haciendo música y tocando en shows.¡Diviértanse!
TMR: ¿Cual es tu posición frente a la descarga ilegal de música? ¿Estas a favor o en contra?
Rick: Definitivamente estamos en contra de la descarga ilegal, es algo que no podemos controlar. Si la gente descarga nuestra música y nos dice que realmente le gusta nuestro música, no me enoja. Es lo que es. Nos daña como banda, pero sin importar lo que pase no podemos detenerlos. Pero apreciamos más a aquellos que compran nuestros discos.
TMR: ¿Hay algún artista o tipo de música que te desagrade?
Rick: ¿Que me desagrade? Hmmm. No creo que haya un tipo de música que me desagrade. He conocido a unos cuantos artistas, que son unos imbéciles, pero no vale la pena mencionarlos Haha.
TMR: ¿Hay alguna historia o momento especial de Fueled By Fire que quieras compartir?
Rick: Hay tantos grandes momentos, pero si hay que elegir uno fue cuando tocamos en el escenario principal del Hellfest en Francia el 2014. Pasamos por un montón de cosas antes de tocar en ese festival, tuvimos problemas con nuestro agente y fue muy complejo llegar a ese show. Pero pienso que el festival fue un punto clave en nuestra carrera, porque compartimos con mis bandas favoritas de toda la vida, Slayer, Iron Maiden y Black Sabbath. Fue un gran honor estar en el mismo cartel con esas bandas. Lo demás son experiencias sueltas. Creo que cada gira tiene muchas grandes experiencias.
TMR: Durante el año 2013, casi vienen a Sudamerica y a Chile. ¿Hay posibilidades de ver a Fueled By Fire por Sudamérica en el futuro cercano?
Rick: Realmente nos gustaría hacer una gira por Sudamérica en el futuro, pero hay montón de cosas que planear para que un tour salga bien. Lo que ayudará a llevarnos a allá, será la demanda de la gente. Así que díganle a los productores que quieren ver a Fueled By Fire en su país.
TMR: ¿Conoces a alguna banda chilena?
Rick: las bandas que se me vienen a la cabeza son Disaster y Nuclear. Esas bandas han lanzado buena música y representan de buena manera a Chile.
TMR: Finalmente ¿Tienes algunas palabras para tus seguidores, especialmente para los latinoamericanos?
Rick: Queremos agradecer a todos los que nos han apoyado. asegúrense de poner nuestra música a todo volumen. Si quieren ponerse en contacto con nosotros, estamos activos en las redes sociales, así que hagan sentir su presencia. Gracias maníacos.

TMR: Hello, let's talk about the beginning, How Fueled By Fire was born?
Rick: The band originally started in 2002 with our drummer Carlos and a former member named Sal. The band started off with all the member learning the instruments together and jamming cover songs, I joined the band around early 2003 and our bass player Anthony joined shortly later that year and that is when we started playing shows. We went through many lineup changes from 2003 to 2006 with members leaving for different reasons, but after a few years of lineup changes, the current lineup was established in 2006. We have released three full length albums and have tour extensively with this lineup.
TMR: What are the main influences of the band?
Rick: We have a lot of different influences, some are more obvious than others. We are definitely influenced by bands like Slayer, Dark Angel, Death, Exodus, Sepultura. But we also get influences from different types of metal ranging from Morbid Angel and possessed to Iron Maiden, Judas priest. We all have our individual preferences when it comes to our influences, so it great room mesh all of our ideas together.
TMR: What is your opinion about the current scene of thrash metal? Do you see a future in it?
Rick: It’s still going strong around the world. I think that as long as great original thrash bands stay active, they will continue to get younger fans interested in playing fast aggressive music. We notice that there are always new bands that keep the spirit of the old ways alive by keeping the music traditional and underground, I think it will always remain that way.
TMR: What are the futures plans for Fueled By Fire?
Rick: We don’t have any immediate plans right now, we’re focusing on our lives outside of music, but I’m hoping we’ll get ready to write a new album sometime early next year. Make sure to keep an eye out on our social media!
TMR: What do you think is considered your best album?
Rick: In my opinion, I can say my favorite album of ours is plunging into darkness. I know bands usually say their latest album is the best, which I will say, is a great album, but I think plunging into darkness just has something special to it, and it was received very well by people even though it wad a very underground album..and maybe we can repeat that again with another album.
TMR: What are your favorite songs to play live?
Rick: I think we all agree that the song “eye of the demon” is all of our favorite, it’s fun and it gets the crowd really moving. Other than that, we all have different favorite songs to play, mine is from our latest album, a song called “obliteration” it’s just a very fun song to play with great headbanging parts.
TMR: What makes you different from other bands of thrash metal?
Rick: I think we have a unique blend of different styles in our songs. We write songs without a mindset of what style of music it will he. People call us a traditional thrash band, but we fuse different elements of metal, like death metal. And I think know our instrument playing separates us as well, we all have a specific way of playing that offers a unique sound.
TMR: As a band with some years of travel, What advice would you give to emerging thrash metal bands?
Rick: If you want to play for the long run, make sure you’re doing it for the love of the music. If the time comes when playing music is no longer fun, then it is no longer worth it. It’s important to stay focused, and ignore all of the negative shit. Keep making music and playing shows. Other than that, party hard!
TMR: What is your stance on illegal downloading of music? Are you in favour or against it?
Rick: We’re definitely against illegal downloading, but it’s something we can’t control. If people download our music and tell us they really like our band, I don’t get mad, it just is what it is. It really does hurt a band like us but no matter what, people will still get our music for free and there is no stopping it. So to those who actually buy our albums, we appreciate you much much more!
TMR: Is there any kind of music or artists in particular that you dislike?
Rick: Dislike? Hmm .. I don’t think there is music we generally dislike. And as for artist, there have been a few that we have met that have been assholes, but it’s not worth mentioning. Haha.
TMR: Do you have a story or a special moment of Fueled By Fire, which you want to share?
Rick: There have been many great moments but one that I feel is special playing the main stage at hell fest in France in 2014. There was a lot that led to us playing that festival, we had problems with our booker and it made it very difficult to make it out for that show. But I think that festival is a great highlight because we shared the bill with some of my all time favorite bands, Slayer, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath. It was a great honor to be on the same bill as those bands. But other than that single experience, I think each tour had many many great experiences.
TMR: During the year 2013, you almost come to South America and Chile, are there chances that you touch South American ground in the near future?
Rick: We would really like to set something up for South America in the future, but there is a lot that goes into planning a tour where everything will go smoothly. What will help bring us out there will be the demand from people! So let it be known that you want fueled by fire in your country!
TMR: Do you know any Chilean band?
Rick: The bands that come to mind are Disaster and Nuclear. Those bands have both released some great music and they represent Chile well.
TMR: Finally, Do you have a few words to all yours followers and especially for the Latin American fans?
